Bubbling potions, mysterious elixirs, cozy taverns, enchanted sweets—Harry Potter already has all the ingredients for a magical night in.

From a creamy Boozy Butterbeer to a color-changing-inspired Polyjuice Potion, here are seven Harry Potter-inspired cocktails you can make at home.

Note: These recipes are unofficial fan creations inspired by the Harry Potter universe and are intended for adults of legal drinking age. Please enjoy responsibly.

1. Boozy Butterbeer

You can’t have a Harry Potter cocktail night without Butterbeer. This adult version is sweet, creamy, buttery, and reminiscent of butterscotch and vanilla.

Ingredients

For the Butterbeer:

  • 1½ oz butterscotch schnapps
  • 1 oz vanilla vodka
  • 6 oz cream soda, chilled
  • Ice

For the Butterscotch Cream:

  • ¼ cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tbsp butterscotch sauce
  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Make the cream topping. Add the heavy cream, butterscotch sauce, vanilla, and salt to a small bowl. Whisk until the mixture thickens slightly but is still pourable.
  2. Fill your glass with ice. A beer mug or large glass works perfectly.
  3. Add the alcohol. Pour the butterscotch schnapps and vanilla vodka over the ice.
  4. Add the cream soda. Slowly pour in the chilled cream soda and gently stir.
  5. Top with butterscotch cream. Spoon or pour the cream mixture over the top.
  6. Finish with a drizzle. Add a little extra butterscotch sauce for an indulgent finishing touch.

Make it extra magical: Serve in a frosted mug and sprinkle a tiny amount of edible gold shimmer over the foam.

2. Polyjuice Potion

Polyjuice Potion isn’t exactly known for looking appetizing in the books, but our cocktail version is much more inviting. This bright green potion is fruity, fizzy, and just mysterious enough for a wizarding party.

Ingredients

  • 1½ oz vodka
  • ½ oz Midori melon liqueur
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • ½ oz fresh lime juice
  • 2 oz lemon-lime soda
  • Ice
  • Lime wheel for garnish
  • Optional: edible green or gold cocktail shimmer

Instructions

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Add the potion ingredients. Pour in the vodka, Midori, pineapple juice, and lime juice.
  3. Shake well. Shake for about 10–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker feels cold.
  4. Strain into a glass. Pour into a goblet, coupe, or potion-style glass filled with fresh ice.
  5. Add the fizz. Top with lemon-lime soda.
  6. Create the magical effect. Add a small pinch of edible cocktail shimmer and gently stir.
  7. Garnish. Finish with a lime wheel.

The shimmer will swirl through the green drink when stirred, giving it the appearance of an actual bubbling potion.

3. Amortentia Love Potion

amorentia love potion harry potter cocktail

Amortentia is the most powerful love potion in the wizarding world, famous for smelling different to everyone who encounters it. Our version is a romantic pink cocktail featuring raspberry, strawberry, lemon, and sparkling wine.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz raspberry vodka
  • ½ oz strawberry liqueur
  • ½ oz fresh lemon juice
  • ½ oz simple syrup
  • 2 oz rosé sparkling wine or Prosecco
  • Ice
  • Fresh strawberry or raspberries for garnish
  • Optional: edible pink or pearl cocktail shimmer

Instructions

  1. Prepare your glass. Chill a coupe or martini glass while you make the cocktail.
  2. Add ice to a shaker.
  3. Combine the base ingredients. Add raspberry vodka, strawberry liqueur, lemon juice, and simple syrup.
  4. Shake for 10–15 seconds.
  5. Strain into your chilled glass.
  6. Top with sparkling wine. Pour it in slowly to preserve the bubbles.
  7. Add shimmer. If using edible cocktail shimmer, add a tiny pinch and gently swirl.
  8. Garnish with berries.

For an extra romantic presentation, garnish the rim with pink sugar.

4. The Felix Felicis

felix felicis harry potter themed cocktail

Also known as Liquid Luck, Felix Felicis temporarily makes the drinker extraordinarily lucky. I can’t promise this cocktail will do the same, but its golden appearance certainly looks worthy of Professor Slughorn’s potion cabinet.

Ingredients

  • 1½ oz gin
  • ½ oz elderflower liqueur
  • ¾ oz fresh lemon juice
  • ½ oz honey syrup
  • 2 oz sparkling wine
  • Ice
  • Lemon twist
  • Edible gold cocktail shimmer

For the honey syrup:

  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp warm water

Instructions

  1. Make the honey syrup. Mix equal parts honey and warm water until completely combined. Let it cool.
  2. Fill a shaker with ice.
  3. Add gin, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, and honey syrup.
  4. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.
  5. Strain into a coupe or champagne glass.
  6. Top with sparkling wine.
  7. Add the magic. Sprinkle in a tiny amount of edible gold cocktail shimmer.
  8. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Give the drink a swirl before serving and watch the gold shimmer move through the glass.

5. The Goblet of Fire

goblet of fire harry potter themed cocktail

This dramatic orange-red cocktail is inspired by the magical Goblet of Fire. It’s citrusy, slightly sweet, and has just enough spice to give it a fiery finish.

Ingredients

  • 1½ oz reposado tequila
  • ½ oz orange liqueur
  • 1 oz blood orange juice
  • ½ oz fresh lime juice
  • ½ oz grenadine
  • 2 thin jalapeño slices
  • Ice
  • Orange slice for garnish

Instructions

  1. Add jalapeño to your shaker. Gently muddle one or two slices. Don’t pulverize them—you only want to release some of the spice.
  2. Fill the shaker with ice.
  3. Add tequila, orange liqueur, blood orange juice, and lime juice.
  4. Shake for approximately 15 seconds.
  5. Strain into an ice-filled glass.
  6. Create the fiery effect. Slowly pour the grenadine down the inside of the glass. It will sink toward the bottom, creating a red-to-orange gradient.
  7. Garnish with an orange slice.

Want less heat? Skip the jalapeño entirely. You’ll still get the gorgeous fiery appearance.

6. The Forbidden Forest

Forbidden forest harry potter themed cocktails

Dark, mysterious, and a little dangerous, this blackberry cocktail is inspired by the Forbidden Forest surrounding Hogwarts.

Ingredients

  • 1½ oz bourbon
  • ¾ oz blackberry liqueur
  • ¾ oz fresh lemon juice
  • ½ oz maple syrup
  • 2 dashes aromatic bitters
  • 3 fresh blackberries
  • Ice
  • Rosemary sprig for garnish

Instructions

  1. Add the blackberries to a shaker.
  2. Gently muddle them until they release their juices.
  3. Add bourbon, blackberry liqueur, lemon juice, maple syrup, and bitters.
  4. Fill the shaker with ice.
  5. Shake vigorously for 15 seconds.
  6. Double strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice to remove most of the blackberry seeds.
  7. Garnish with rosemary and fresh blackberries.

For a particularly moody presentation, serve this one in a dark goblet or vintage-style glass.

7. The Dementor’s Kiss

dementor's kiss harry potter cocktail

If a Dementor’s Kiss were a cocktail, it would have to be dark, cold, and dangerously tempting. This dessert-style drink combines coffee, chocolate, and vodka for something that feels like it came straight from the darker corners of the wizarding world.

Ingredients

  • 1½ oz vodka
  • 1 oz coffee liqueur
  • ½ oz dark chocolate liqueur
  • 1 oz chilled espresso
  • ½ oz heavy cream
  • Ice
  • Chocolate shavings for garnish

Instructions

  1. Brew your espresso and allow it to cool.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker generously with ice.
  3. Add vodka, coffee liqueur, chocolate liqueur, espresso, and heavy cream.
  4. Shake vigorously. Give it a good 15–20 second shake to create a frothy top.
  5. Strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass.
  6. Garnish with dark chocolate shavings.

For an even darker look, rim the glass with crushed chocolate cookies before pouring the cocktail.

How to Create a Harry Potter Cocktail Bar at Home

If you’re serving these drinks for a party, half the fun is in the presentation. Turn a table or bar cart into your own miniature potion classroom by displaying the cocktail ingredients in vintage bottles, decanters, and glass jars.

Handwritten potion labels can transform ordinary bottles of vodka, gin, and liqueurs into mysterious magical ingredients. Add battery-operated candles, old books, brass candlesticks, potion bottles, and dark table linens to complete the atmosphere.

You could even create a small Potions Menu featuring:

  • Boozy Butterbeer — sweet, creamy & buttery
  • Polyjuice Potion — fruity, fizzy & mysterious
  • Amortentia — sparkling, romantic & berry-sweet
  • Felix Felicis — golden, citrusy & floral
  • Goblet of Fire — citrusy, bold & spicy
  • Forbidden Forest — dark, fruity & smoky
  • Dementor’s Kiss — rich, creamy & decadent

A Little Magic in Every Glass

You don’t need a ticket to Hogwarts—or even a wand—to create a little wizarding magic at home.

These Harry Potter-inspired cocktails are perfect for Halloween parties, themed birthdays, Harry Potter movie marathons, book club nights, or any evening when a regular glass of wine simply doesn’t feel magical enough.

So light the candles, put on your favorite Harry Potter film, pull out your prettiest potion bottles, and start mixing.

Cheers—and remember: never drink a potion unless you know exactly what’s in it.
